Smoothed Out Slappy Hours
1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is the first full length album by California punk rock trio Green Day. Released in 1991 on the independent Lookout label, it is composed of material from several EPs the band recorded in the late 80's as well as from a shorter album called 39/Smooth (released in 1990). 1309/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is the only Green Day release to feature Al Sobrante(John Kiffmeyer) on the drums. Tre Cool took over for subsequent albums. 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours features a Green Day barely old enough to vote. The recording quality is less than on other albums, and many of the songs are simplistic and similar sounding. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong sounds noticeably younger than on the band's later releases. Song highlights include I Was There and At the Library, as well as an eponymous song celebrating marijuana usage. 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours saw regional success in California, and paved the way for the band's sophomore effort, Kerplunk, which sold well nationally for an independent record and in turn laid the groundwork for 1994's major label smash hit Dookie.
