51st Highland Regiment
The 51st Highland Regiment is an infantry regiment of the British Territorial Army. The regiment traces its history to the 51st Highland Volunteers, which was formed in 1967, its companies succeeding the Territorial battalions of the Highland Brigade. The name commemorated that of the 51st Highland Division, which fought during the First and Second World Wars. In 1971 the regiment gained a 2nd Battalion, and in 1975 a 3rd Battalion was formed. In 1981 the 3rd Battalion effectively became the Territorial battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and in 1995 became the 7th/8th (V) Battalion of that regiment, while the 2nd Battalion became the 3rd (V) Battalion of The Highlanders. The 1st Battalion had meanwhile been redesignated the 3rd (V) Battalion, The Black Watch. The current regiment was formed in 1999 by the amalgamation of all three of these battalions in consequence of the reforms of the Territorial Army. The Regimental Headquarters is based at Perth and the regiment has five companies: - A (Black Watch) Company
- B (Highlanders) Company
- C (Highlanders) Company
- D (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company
- E (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company
As part of the restructuring of the British Army, it is expected that the 51st Highland Regiment will become one of the two Territorial Army battalions of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
