Abscissa

 

Abscissa

In mathematics, abscissa means the x coordinate on an (x, y) graph; the input of a mathematical function against which the output is plotted.

y is the "ordinate.

The term was probably first coined by Leibniz and comes from a Latin word meaning to tear off.
