Alberta general election, 1993
The 23rd general election for the Province of Alberta, Canada, was held on June 15, 1993 to elect members of the Alberta legislature. After the resignation of Don Getty as party leader and provincial premier, the Progressive Conservative Party elected former Calgary mayor Ralph Klein as his replacement. The initial response from voters was muted: the party increased its share of the popular vote only marginally, and lost eight seats in the legislature. It nonetheless continued to have a large majority in the legislature for its seventh consecutive term in government. The Liberal Party of Laurence Decore capitalized on the stagant PC vote and the collapse of the New Democratic Party vote from 26% to 11%. As opposition to the PC government coalesced around Decore and the Liberals, they managed to win almost 40% of the popular vote and 32 seats in the legislature, forming the largest opposition caucus in Alberta history. Ray Martin's NDP were shut out of the legislature for the first time since 1967.
