Aldine, Houston, Texas

Aldine was once a town, but now is an incorporated area located in Houston, Harris County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 13,979.

The Aldine area is nearby Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is the second largest aviation facility in Texas. Aldine still has its own school district.

Geography


Aldine is located at 29°55'9" North, 95°22'47" West (29.919136, -95.379834) .

According to the United States Census Bureau, the area has a total area of 21.0 km² (8.1 mi²). 21.0 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 13,979 people, 4,007 households, and 3,193 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 667.2/km² (1,727.0/mi²). There are 4,403 housing units at an average density of 210.1/km² (543.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 59.30% White, 5.84% African American, 0.69% Native American, 3.41% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 27.58% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. 56.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,007 households out of which 45.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.44 and the average family size is 3.86.

In the area the population is spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 107.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.4 males.

The median income for a household in the area is $32,437, and the median income for a family is $35,518. Males have a median income of $28,779 versus $19,936 for females. The per capita income is $11,701. 18.6% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.3% of those under the age of 18 and 19.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Was originally built on the International–Great Northern Railroad and named for a local farm family. The community had a post office from 1896 until 1935, when mail was delivered from Houston. By 1914 Aldine had two general stores, a fig preserver, and several poultry breeders and dairymen. The population briefly reached 100 in 1925 but fell in the 1930s and 1940s to between thirty and forty. The Aldine schools were integrated by federal order in 1965. The community began growing again in the late 1970s. It had a population of 12,623 in 1986 and 11,133 in 1990.
