Apennins
Apennins is the name of a département of the First French Empire in present Italy. It was named after the Apennine Mountains. It was formed in 1805, when Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Republic of Genoa. Its capital was Chiavari. It was divided into the following arrondissements and cantons (situation 1812): - Chiavari, cantons: Chiavari, Borzonasca, Lavagna, Moconesi, Rapallo, Santo Stefano d'Aveto, Sestri Levante and Varese Ligure.
- Pontremoli, cantons: Pontremoli, Bagnone, Berceto, Borgo Val di Taro, Compiano, Filattiera, Groppoli and Terrarossa.
- Sarzana, cantons: Sarzana, Albiano, Calice al Cornoviglio, Fivizzano, Sesta Godano, La Spezia, Lerici, Levanto and Vezzano Ligure.
It was disbanded after the defeat of Napoleon in 1814. Its territory is presently divided over the Italian provinces Genoa, La Spezia, Massa-Carrara and Parma.
