Aquathlon
An Aquathon is a multisport athletic event consisting of a two stage race involving swimming and running. The aquathon competitive field generally overlaps with that of triathlon. The ITU holds an Aquathon world championship, typically held in the week before and at the same location as the as the ITU standard course triathlon world championship. One of the reasons why holding an aquathon rather than a triathlon can be an attractive option for a race director is because not only does it remove one of the legs from a triathlon but it also takes away the one which can be the most difficult for them to manage due to the large amount of area which the bike leg of a triathlon would go over while the running and swimming can be contained to a rather small and manageable area. These factors have made Aquathlons far more common place in some place than Triathlons themselves which are where they came from originally. Modern pentathletes have something similar to an Aquathon in which they have swimming combined with cross-country running (swimming and cross-country running being two of the events which make up the Modern Pentathlon). They call it a Biathlon that being a natural variation to have from the name Pentathlon.
