Arben Xhaferi

Arben Xhaferi

Arben Xhaferi is the party president of the Party for Democracy of Albanians in Macedonia (PPDSH). Xhaferi is an influential fighter in the battle between minority Albanians and the majority Slavic Macedonians in Macedonia and has been both vocal in calling for a change in the Preamble of the Constitution of Macedonia. Xhaferi's "The DPA Non-Paper", and "The Challenges of Democracy in Multiethnic States," accurately depict the beliefs of the PPDSH concerning the state of Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia and the solutions required to improve the quality of life for ethnic monorities.

From NATO bombardment, to the doomed coalition government between the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO) and Xhaferi's DPA, Xhaferi has unerringly anticipated the turn of events since he came to office.

Quotes

1. "As Arend Lijphart, a political philosopher at Yale University, has argued in his book Democracy in Plural Societies, consensual decision-making offers the only chance for the survival of multiethnic social formations. Anything else will lead to confrontation, polarization, ethnic despotism, and, in the end, the disintegration of the State."

2. "The position of the Democratic Party of Albanians in Macedonia (DPA) is that the crisis is an interethnic one, because it raises issues that have to do with the position of Albanians in the social system. The crisis in Macedonia is not a spillover from Kosova, as many observers initially surmised, and credit for this should be given to the Albanian political factors in Kosova, Albania, and Macedonia who condemned violence as a means of expressing political dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, this does not change the inherently ethnic character of the conflict."
