Archer County, Texas

Archer County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 8,854. Its county seat is Archer City6. Archer is named for Branch Tanner Archer, a commissioner for the Republic of Texas. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)

Geography


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,398 km² (926 mi²). 2,356 km² (910 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.74% water.

    Demographics


    As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,854 people, 3,345 households, and 2,515 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 3,871 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.54% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.28% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 4.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

    There are 3,345 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.00% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.08.

    In the county, the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

    The median income for a household in the county is $38,514, and the median income for a family is $45,984. Males have a median income of $31,386 versus $22,119 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,300. 9.00% of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.90% of those under the age of 18 and 10.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
