Babacar Mbodji I of Gandiaye

Babacar Mbodji I of Gandiaye

King Babacar Mbodji I is currently the king or "bour" (in 2004) of the Kingdom of Gandiaye in Kaolack, Senegal. He is tributary under King Mbaye Badiane I of Saloum in the system of the indigenous royalty of Senegal. He was enthroned at Gandiaye on a mat of reeds to succeed his predecessor, King Ibrahima Mbodji I, as the latest in a line of kings from the 11th century, when the King of Saloum created the first one. The King of Gandiaye is locally believed to be protected by special pangool spirits, in the religion of the Sereer people.
