Bachelor of Medicine

Bachelor of Medicine

The Bachelor of Medicine, abbreviated BM is an academic degree abbreviation denoting the degree obtained after studying Medicine at University.

In the UK, the Bachelor of Medicine is often conjoined with the Bachelor of Surgery (BS) to form the degree which is required to qualify as a medical Doctor.

The Latin version of the BM BS is the MB ChB or MB BChir meaning ' Medicinae Baccleureus, Chirugiae Baccleureus ' or literally 'Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery'.

However, occasionally the different Latin and English abbreviations may be combined by certain institutions such that BM BCh and MB BS are also common.

Although British Doctors are adressed 'Doctor' they are not, however, genuine academic doctors, as the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery degree, in academia, is not a Doctorate but rather a Bachelor.

The MD, or Medicinae Doctor (Doctor of Medicine) degree is the medical doctorate, equivalent to the PhD in the UK.

In the United States of America, the MD is equivalent to the BM BS in the UK, the initial medical qualification obtained from university.
