Beef (music)

"Beef" is a slang term primarily used in hip-hop music to refer to a conflict between two M.C's, which is usually expressed on records called "battle records". Insults traded in a beef, "on wax" or otherwise, are called "disses".

History of Beef

Beef has been around almost since the inception of hip-hop, but its roots trace back even further to rock n roll music. Neil Young recorded two songs blasting racism in the 1970's, "Southern Man" and "Alabama". The Jacksonville, Flordia band Lynyrd Skynyrd where therefore the first people to diss another artist on record when they mentioned Young's name in their seminal hit "Sweet Home, Alabama", which could be seen in today's terms as a "response record".
