British West Indies

British West Indies

The British West Indies sometimes called Royal West Indies are those islands in the Caribbean that are or were British colonies. The term also included the two to three mainland Caribbean territories of the British: British Honduras and British Guiana and (whilst it was British) the Mosquito Coast (also known as the Miskito Coast)

Most are now independent states, after an attempt at a West Indies Federation.

Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago

A few remained or reverted to being British colonies.

Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The two mainland territories also became independent and changed their names (either before or upon independence).

British Honduras became Belize and British Guiana became Guyana.

The British West Indies still make up a composite cricket team that successfully competes in test matches and one-day internationals. The West Indies cricket team also includes the South American nation of Guyana, a former British colony.
