Charmander Charmander (Japanese: ヒトカゲ Hitokage) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. Charmander, as well as its evolved forms, has a flame on the tip of its tail; the flame is said to indicate its life-force, burning weaker or stronger depending on the Charmander's condition. Baby Charmander that are not yet familiar with this flame sometimes accidentally burn themselves with it. Charmander generally prefer hot places to live. Name originCharmander is a probably portmanteau of char and salamander. Hitokage was probably formed from 火蜥蜴 (hi tokage, literally fire lizard), but can also be viewed as being a pun on words (人影 - hito kage, means shadowy figure). AvailabilityIn Pokémon Red and Blue, Charmander is one of the starter Pokémon, along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle. The same is true in their enhanced remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. In Pokémon Yellow, Charmander is not a starter, but one is given to the player as a gift at one point. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Charmander can only be obtained through trading with the original three versions. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Charmander is only obtainable by trading with FireRed and LeafGreen. Charmander also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap. Anime AppearancesIn the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum and his friends once found a Charmander on a rock, waiting for its owner. Because a Charmander will die if the flame on its tail goes out, they feared for its life during a rainstorm. Ash and his friends rescued it and took it to the local Pokémon Center, but it returned to the very same rock once it had recovered. It turned out that its Trainer had abandoned it and deceived the Charmander by convincing it he would come back for it. After the Charmander discovered this, it rejected its previous Trainer for Ash. Ash's Charmander later evolved into Charmeleon and then into Charizard. Richie who is a friend of Ash had a Charmander and used it when he had to battle Ash in in the Kanto Pokemon league in the episode Friend and Foe Alike. Richie later appeared in a 3 part apperace when he helps Ash and his friends rescue a Lugia kidnapped by Team Rocket. Richie calls out his Charmeleon to battle some Team Rocket grunts. Him calling out Charmeleon reveals his Charmander evolved. Charmander was not seen again until the season 7 episode A Six Pack Attack, an episode that aired almost 6 years after Friend and Foe Alike. In A Six Pack Attack Ash & his friends decide to visit Little Root town to visit Professor Birch. When Birch reveals that Professor Oak is coming to show Professor Birch some Pokemon Ash and Brock go with him while May and Max wait at Birch's labrotory with his assistant who lets May and Max play with a Torchic, Mudkip, and a Treecko. Professor Oak waited at the harbor so long he decided to go to Birch's lab himself and literally bumps into Max who is delighted to meet him. Max wanted to know if he brought any Pokemon and he lets out a Charmander, Squirtle, and a Bulbasaur. Max is so happy to see these Pokemon he ends up bothering them so much he gets hit by some attacks. Team Rocket who is spying on them decide to steal the 6 starters, and give them to their boss. They end up catching them and hide in a secret base behind a waterfall. Luckily Oak, May and Max are able to find where they are but get trapped in a hole when they were about to approach the caged Pokemon. Max is able to squeeze through, and Oak tells Max to tell Charmander and Torchic to use Ember on the cage, then have Squirtle and Mudkip use Water Gun, then finally have Bulbasaur tackle, and Treecko to pound. However when Oak, May, Max, and the Pokemon try to leave the cave Team Rocket close up the entrance but some Pokemon who live in the cave show them to a different exit. Ash and Brock finally return and, and along with Charmander and Torchic's Ember attacks are able to send Team Rocket flying. External links
