Cure Autism Now
Cure Autism Now or CAN is an organization dedicated to finding a possible cure for autism and funds a lot of research (such as genetic research) to this end. It was founded by Portia Iversen and Jon Shestack, parents of a lower-functioning autistic son named Dov. However, its goal of curing autism and its funding of research into prenatal screening place it in the middle of the controversies in autism.
Controversy This aim of curing autism is highly controversal in the autistic community since its stated aim is to cure and prevent the condition. Many find this idea offensive because it classes Autism as being undesirable - especially to those who believe that autism is not a disability. CAN fund the world's largest repository of DNA samples for autism research known as AGRE. CAN are also known to be supporters of behavioural therapy (or ABA for short).
