Dalkeith

Dalkeith

Dalkeith (pop. 11,566 in 2001) is a burgh of barony in Midlothian, Scotland, lying on the River North Esk. Dalkeith Palace, just outside the town, is a seat of the Duke of Buccleuch, surrounded by parkland and follies. It's got a couple of nice parks, lots of pubs, and a great Italian restaurant. It's the main administrative centre for Midlothian, but it's best at being a feeder town for beautiful Edinburgh. The playpark in Dalkeith palace is fantastic.

Dalkeith lies on the A68, one of the main routes south from Edinburgh to Jedburgh and across the border to Darlington. Plans for a Dalkeith bypass have yet to come to fruition.

The planned reestablishment of the Waverley Railway Line will link Dalkeith to the national rail network, with a station at Eskbank on the western edge of Dalkeith.

The Celtic prefix dal- indicates a water-meadow. Compare Dallas.

Dalkeith is also a suburb of Perth, Western Australia.
