The DDT ban ended or severely curtailed the use of DDT to kill or repel mosquitoes in Third World countries. The ban was made on the grounds that indiscriminate DDT use would result in residue coming up the food chain and harming birds or people.
The ban is controversial. Some people supported it, in the hopes that less DDT use would cause more malaria deaths, thus reducing population (see eugenics, population control). Others opposed it, also expecting that the ban would increase malaria deaths, but on the opposite grounds: they believed that a program which caused more human deaths was bad on ethical or moral grounds.
