Eaton Hall

Eaton Hall

Eaton Hall is a mansion set within a large park near Chester in England. It is the country house of the Duke of Westminster.

The mansion has been rebuilt, demolished, and rebuilt again several times. A mansion by Sir John Vanbrugh was replaced by a huge gothic pile by Alfred Waterhouse, which in turn was replaced by a modern 1960s-style white stoned mansion, said by some to resemble a ranch house at the end of a dusty road in Argentina.

In the 1990s, this house was refaced in stone and given a classical air. The huge chapel by Waterhouse remains adjacent to the new house; its tower imitates Big Ben in London. At one time, "There is no place like home" played from the chapel campanile each time the Duke approached the house.

The mansion contains a fine collection of furniture and paintings assembled by the Grosvenor family. The family have achieved their fortune by owning large parts of the smarter areas of London.

Eaton Hall is a private residence and not open to the public.
