Eragon (character)

Eragon is the main protagonist of the Inheritance trilogy and is the title character of the first novel.

Near the beginning of Eragon, he discovers a mysterious Dragon egg. It soon hatches and Eragon names the hatchling Saphira. Eragon takes on the mantle of the legendary dragon riders. Creatures called the Ra'zac, dragon slayers for the evil king Galbatorix, come looking for the dragon egg. The Ra'zac kill Eragon's uncle, Garrow. Eragon leaves his town in pursuit of the Ra'zac, with Saphira's help. An old storyteller named Brom comes with Eragon to assist him in revenge on the Ra'zac. In the town of Yazuac, Eragon discovers that he has magical powers. Brom reveals that he knows about magic and helps develop Eragon's abilities and they travel to the town of Teirm, where Brom's friend Jeod lives. Here they learn that the Ra'zac have hidden in the city of Dras Leona. Eragon, Brom, and Saphira then go to Dras Leona to finally avenge Garrow. While in Dras Leona Eragon and Brom are ambushed and captured by the Ra'zac. The Ra'zac wound Eragon but Brom is stabbed protecting Eragon. A young man named Murtagh comes to their aid. Brom is about to die when he reveals to Eragon that he used to be a Dragon Rider. Soon afterward Eragon is captured in Gil'ead and rescues Arya. He escapes with the help of Murtagh. Murtagh and Eragon then travel across the Hadarac Desert to reach the Varden, with the help of Arya. When all four of them reach the Varden they are attacked by hundreds of Urgals. Eragon becomes the hero of the battle when he stabs the Urgals' leader, the Shade Durza.
