Escape to River Cottage the first River Cottage series in which celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall takes over a Dorset cottage and sets out to achieve a form of rural self-sufficiency. Along the way he encountered many challenges largely caused by the weather, pests and his own questionable competence. Marge the cow, Joanna the sheep and the local vegetable guru Michael Michaud (with whom Hugh has a who can grow the hottest chili competition) all make regular appearances as the series develops into a fascinating insight into country life.
