Escatawpa is a census-designated place and town in Jackson County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 3,566.

Geography


Escatawpa is at 30°29'21" North, 88°33'4" West (30.489200, -88.551168).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²). 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.83% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 3,566 people, 1,310 households, and 1,002 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 213.5/km² (552.8/mi²). There are 1,434 housing units at an average density of 85.8/km² (222.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 80.45% White, 17.64% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Households

There are 1,310 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.06.

Ages

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.8 males.

Income

The median income for a household in the CDP is $41,101, and the median income for a family is $48,942. Males have a median income of $35,050 versus $20,762 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,850. 8.7% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.2% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
