E. W. Scripps
Edward W. Scripps (18 June, 1854 - 12 March, 1926) was an American newspaper publisher and founder of the Scripps-Howard media conglomerate and United Press International news syndicate. The school of journalism at the Ohio University is named for him.
Early life Scripps was born and raised in Rushville, Illinois to British immigrants. He had five brothers and sisters. His sister Ellen Browning Scripps was the founding donor of the Scripps Research Institute.
Newspaper career He co-founded The Detroit News with his brother James in 1873, and in 1878 founded The Penny Press (later The Cleveland Press) in Cleveland. He went on to begin or acquire some 25 newspapers by the time of his death in 1926.
