Felipe Quispe

Felipe Quispe

Felipe Quispe Huanca "El Mallku" (Aymara language: "prince") is a radical Bolivian political leader. He heads the Pachakutik Indigenous Movement and is secretary general of the United Farm Workers' Union of Bolivia. Quispe's ultimate political aim is to become president and return political power in Bolivia to the Aymara majority of which he is a member.

In 1984, he was one of the leading organisers of the Tupac Katari Guerrilla Army, a failed armed insurrection against the Bolivian government. Quispe was arrested for his involvement in the movement on August 19, 1992.

A staunch opponent of the United States (see anti-American sentiment) and the IMF, Quispe has been classified as a terrorist by the FBI. He is strongly against American coca eradication schemes, which he sees as destroying a critical part of Aymara culture.
