Ferdinand Eisenstein

Ferdinand Eisenstein

Ferdinand Gotthold Max Eisenstein (April 16, 1823 - October 11, 1852) was a German mathematician.

Like Galois and Abel, Eisenstein died before the age of 30, and like Abel, his death was due to tuberculosis. He was born and died in Berlin Germany.

Gauss is said to have claimed, "There have been only three epoch-making mathematicians: Archimedes, Newton, and Eisenstein". Gauss's choice of Eisenstein, who specialized in analysis, seemed strange to many, but Gauss may have thought that had Eisenstein lived longer, he would have fulfilled his true potential.
