Fylgja

Fylgja

Belief in a Fylgja or Følje (consort or follower) is a consistent feature of Scandinavian mythology. A Follower or Warden (vorðr) spirit is tied to a person, a place or a family-clan (Aett). It can appear in dreams or in life, in norse literature usually as a dire omen, taking on a skin appropriate to the occasion, such as a giant or an animal (examples include a bloodstained billy goat, a bear, a small fish and a mouse).

Seið rituals often attempt to manipulate a warden spirit, either by having the warden leave the Volve's skin and travel in an animal skin to learn otherwise inaccessible secrets, or by questioning, stealing or banishing wardens.
