G8 Summit, 2004

The Group of Eight (G8) leaders are meeting at Sea Island, Georgia, USA, starting June 8, 2004.


Following is the G8 Summit Schedule:

Tuesday June 8:


-- President George W. Bush welcomes fellow leaders Tuesday afternoon and holds talks with individual countries.


-- An opening dinner begins at 8:00 pm (0000 GMT) for the G8 leaders, all men, and their wives.

Wednesday, June 9:


-- Discussions begin with the outlook for the world economy, in particular sky-high oil prices and foreign currency movements.


-- The major item for the morning is the Middle East, and a US-devised "Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiative" to promote political, social and economic reforms in the region. Bush has invited leaders from Afghanistan (news - web sites), Algeria, Bahrein, Jordan, Turkey and Yemen to join the discussions.


-- The afternoon is devoted mostly to security and terrorism.


-- At dinner, the leaders are expected to discuss current international affairs.

Thursday, June 10


-- G8 leaders discuss development in Africa, joined by leaders from Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda.


The summit will be wrapped up with separate news conferences by Bush and his colleagues between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm (2000 GMT and 2100 GMT).
