G. K. Butterfield

George Kenneth Butterfield, Jr. (born April 27, 1947) commonly known as G. K. Butterfield, is an American Democratic politician. He currently represents North Carolina's 1st Congressional district (map) in the United States House of Representatives.

Before his election to Congress, Butterfield was a judge sitting on the North Carolina Superior Court from 1989 to 2001. In 2001, he was appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court. In 2002, Butterfield lost his seat on the Supreme Court. The same year, Butterfield returned to the Superior Court via a special appointment and served until his retirement in May 2004.

Butterfield was elected to Congress in a special election held on July 20, 2004 to fill the unexpired term of retired Rep. Frank Ballance; he defeated Republican candidate Greg Dority and Libertarian Party Tom Eisenmenger, and was sworn into office on July 21, 2004. On the same day, Butterfield won the Democratic primary for the general election to be held in November 2004; he again faced Republican Greg Dority and won his first full term with 63% of the popular vote.
