Gobichettipalayam

 

Gobichettipalayam

Gobichettipalayam (often simply called Gobi) is a semi-rural community in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu state, India. It was founded on June 1, 1949, and has a total population (as per the 2001 census) of approximately 74,000. The town was named after Gobana chettiar, an old man who lived at the site. Old name of Gobi is Verapandi Gramam, still old records/documents contains this name.

Agriculutre centers on rice paddies, sugarcane, banana, and tumeric. Some spinning mills to support the local weaving industry are also developing in the region.

The town is home to the Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, a 5-acre (20,234 ) Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kaliamman (an incarnation of Kali), as well as to the Gobi Arts & Science College.
