Hanging scroll

Hanging scroll

A hanging scroll, wall hanging, or wall scroll, is a type of traditional scroll, with rods on the top and bottom, usually hung on walls.

Introduced into Japan from China during the 6th century, these were first used to display Buddhist pictures hung in temples; they eventually became common in the home, often including seasonal subjects accompaning paintings and calligraphy. These are commonly hung in the tokonoma.

Hanging scrolls of anime and manga characters are popular in North America.
