Harambee

Harambee

In Kenya, a harambee is a community event designed to raise money for a person, such as someone with an illness, or for a situation, such as a school in need of repair.

The gatherings, named after a Swahili word meaning "come together", range from informal affairs lasting a few hours in which invitations are spread by word of mouth, to formal, multi-day events advertised in newspapers. They have long been important in parts of East Africa as ways to build and maintain community.

The word is also the official motto of Kenya.

Harambee is a well-known Kenyan song by Fadhili Williams, recorded by Charles Worrod in the now-defunct Equator Sound Studios.

The word "jamboree"--an outdoor gathering, often referring to a Boy Scout convention, is related to this word.
