Haydee Tamara Bunke Bider

Haydče Tamara Bunke Bider (November 19, 1937August 31, 1967) was a German-born communist revolutionary also known as Tania the Guerrilla. She was the only woman to fight alongside Bolivian communists rebels under Che Guevara.

Bider was born to German communists Erich Bunke and Nadia Bider, who had fled from Nazi Germany to Argentina. In 1952 the family moved to East Germany. At the age of 18, Tamara Bider was accepted into the ranks of the Unified Socialist Party of Germany.

In 1960 Bider met Che Guevara when he was visiting DDR with the Cuban trade delegation while she was working as an interpreter. In 1961 Bider moved to Cuba. There she worked in the Ministry of Education, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples and the Federation of Cuban Women.

In November 1964 Bider left for Bolivia using the name Laura Gutierrez Bauer to gather information about Bolivian high society while working as a teacher. In 1966 she joined a guerrilla group of a Bolivian guerrilla Juan Vitalio Acuna, possibly against the wishes of Che Guevara, who was leading the guerrilla campaign.

On August 31, 1967, at Vado del Yeso, Bolivian soldiers ambushed the group and killed most of its members. Bider was shot when she was crossing a river and her body was swept away. Bolivian soldiers found it September 6. She was buried the next day.

Bider's remains were found in October 13 1998 near the remains of the other members of Guevara's group in Bolivia. They were transferred to Cuba, where she was reburied alongside her comrades.
