Herb Asher
Herb Asher is a fictional character in the Philip K. Dick novel The Divine Invasion. True to Dick's use of religious symbolism throughout his VALIS trilogy, the name "Herb Asher" is a alteration of an important Biblical Hebrew phrase, "Ehyeh asher Ehyeh", meaning "I will be what I will be." In the context of Moses' dialogue with God, Ehyeh is the name for God. Ehyeh is the Qal imperfect first person form of the verb havah ("Herb") "I will be." Similarly Dick chose the name "Archer" for the protagonist in The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, as well as for the middle name of one of his daughters.
