Hiei (YuYu Hakusho)
Hiei (飛影), also known as Hiei of the Evil Eye (Jaganshi Hiei), is a fictional character in the anime and manga YuYu Hakusho. Nobuyuki Hiyama is Hiei's seiyū in the original Japanese anime. Hiei is a fire/Kōrime demon (yōkai). He is known as the forbidden one because he's a fire demon born to a Koorime (Ice demons) and Koorime are all females. This is due to the fact that his mother inacted with a male outside their forbidden valley. After being cast out he grew up with a gang of bandits, until he was forced to leave because they all became afraid of him. He possesses an Evil Eye, or the Jagan, which amplifies his power and enables him to summon the fires of Makai (Demon Realm); he got it because he wanted to watch over his twin sister Yukina who was born alongside him. The one who gave it to him, Shigure, told Hiei that he would lose most of his yoki from the pain he was going to endure. So Hiei chose to accept Shigure's offer of learning the art of swordsmanship from him in order to survive. The payment for the operation would be that Shigure made Hiei promise that he will never tell Yukina that he is her brother. Hiei, of course, wasn't really going to tell her anyway. Hiei hides his third eye behind his bandanna, revealing it only when he needs to use it. Hiei then traveled to the Human Realm to search for Yukina and it was during this that he first met Kurama. Originally, Hiei met Yusuke when Hiei was the leader of an underworld crime ring and was one of the three yokai that Yusuke Urameshi fought on his first case. Hiei became a valuable ally afterwards starting with Yusuke's third case against the Saint Beasts. During Yusuke's fourth mission which is to rescue Yukina, he is given the task to give Yusuke the tape that had the details of the mission. He was given the task because, Koenma doesn't want him to find out, because knowing Hiei he will certainly kill Tarukane, the man who is holding her. Hiei would be severely punished if he were to succeed since Yokai are forbidden to kill humans. Hiei finds out about this anyway and almost succeeds in killing Tarukane, but Yukina stops him, because she doesn't want any more violence despite the cruelty that Tarukane had done to her. During the Anokoku Būtsukai (Dark Tournament) saga, Hiei is able to master the Jaou Ensatsu Kokuryuha and other Jaou Ensatsu techniques in a short amount of time thanks to his Jagan eye. He only got to fight in four matches during the entire Tournament. During the Chapter Black saga, Hiei at first did not want to join the group in their mission against Shinobu Sensui because he felt it did not involve him in any way. Later after saving Yusuke from Sensui's follower Sniper (Kaname Hagiri), Hiei fought against Yusuke again in order to help calm him down since he is very angry at Sensui for kidnapping Kuwabara. Afterwards Hiei finds that if Sensui's plan were to succeed then weak and inferior yokai would be able to cross into the Human Realm which he is not happy about so he agrees to help the group with their mission. Hiei typically squabbles with Kazuma Kuwabara and one thing that he has in common with the aged fighter Genkai is that they both think that Kuwabara is both an idiot and a fool. Although Hiei usually likes to work on his own agenda, has a desire to fight strong opponents and is the least trusted of the group. Hiei is very honorable, however, and always keeps his promise. Other than being a master swordsman from the skills that he learned from Shigure, Hiei is also very fast, able to move faster than the Human Eye and he is a master of the Jaou Ensatsu Kokuryuha.
Attacks
Although he mostly relies on his other skills here is a listing of the techniques that Hiei uses. He always takes his Bandana off when he uses any of his techniques: - Jaō Ensatsu Kokuryuha (literally Evil King Immolating Black Dragon Wave, Black Dragon Hell Fire in the English manga, Black Dragon Wave in the U.S. Magna Corps Dub, or Dragon of the Darkness Flame in the Funimation Dub)- This is Hiei's most powerful and well known technique. Using a large amount of his Aura (Yoki), Hiei is able to draw out a dragon made of yoki flames and send it at his opponent. His Evil Eye (Jagan) helps him control the dragon. The first time he used this technique was during the Dark Tournament against Zeru, a member of the Jolly Devil Six (English manga) a.k.a. Team Rokuyukai (Japanese versions, English anime) who is also a flame user. However, Hiei's right arm was burned for awhile because it was his first attempt at summoning the dragon in the Human Realm. During his match against Team Toguro's, Bui, Hiei demonstrates he now can control the technique because he has a dragon tattoo on his right arm that is concealed by a powerful seal. Later after Bui reflects the technique back at Hiei, Hiei demonstrates that when he absorbs the technique it can temporarily amplify his power. But a side effect is that Hiei has to hibernate for awhile after it wears off.
- Jaō Ensatsu Rengoku Shou (Evil King Immolating Scorching Purgatory or Fist of the Mortal Flame in the English Dub)- First used against Kuromomotoro (Kuro Momotoro) of Team Uraotogi it where Hiei draws in flames from the Human Realm and surrounds it on his fists and then punches his opponent with it.
- Jaō Ensatsu Ken (Evil King Immolating Sword or Sword of the Darkness Flame in the English Dub)- During his match against Kuromomotoro he had an advantage against Hiei since his millet dumplings (Steaming Spheres) allow him to block against any kind of attack that has already been used against him. This puts Hiei in a tight spot, with a Broken Katana, his Fist of the Mortal Flame now rendered useless, and he will die if he uses the Black Dragon Hell Fire, Hiei is forced to use this technique. It is where he produces a sword made of Human Realm flames that bears a strong resemblance to Kuwabara's Rei Ken. The only difference is that the Sword of the Darkness Flame is in a whole different league compared to the Rei Ken. The main reason why Hiei doesn't like to use this technique is because of its resemblance to the Rei Ken and his distaste towards Kuwabara. He only used this a few times times during the series.
