Hitachi (train)

The Hitachi trains in Melbourne, Australia, introduced from 1972 were built by Martin & King (M & D cars) and the Victorian Railways (T cars). All Hitachi sets were converted to run in a M-T-M (Motor Car - Trailer Car - Motor Car) combination by the late 1970s, with the D cars converted to T cars.

Hitachi trains are currently being withdrawn, with the last sets expected to be withdrawn by December 2005. New X'Trapolis and Siemens trains are being introduced to replace the aging fleet. Withdrawn carriages are currently (late 2004) being offered for sale to private buyers across Australia.
