Hotchkiss School

The Hotchkiss School is a private, coeducational preparatory school in Lakeville, Connecticut, USA. It is one of the wealthiest high schools in the world.

History

It was founded in 1891 by Maria Bissell Hotchkiss with the encouragement of Yale University president Timothy Dwight V.

Campus and Facilities

The school is set in 545 acres (2 km²) of woodland near two lakes, which allows it to offer environmental science courses. The school is well known for its photography and video program. A 212,000-ft² (19,700 m²) athletic center opened in 2002; a 715-seat glass-enclosed performing arts center and music pavilion will open in spring 2005. Hotchkiss' 9-hole golf course was created by famed designer Seth Raynor. As of the start of the 2004-2005 school year Hotchkiss boasted 555 students, more than 200 faculty and staff, and an endowment of more than $320 million.

Alumni include

In the book Primary Colors by Joe Klein, later turned into a film, the principal character Henry Burton was educated at Hotchkiss, and is frequently referred to as 'Hotchkiss'. In Jeffrey Archer's novel Sons of Fortune protagonist Fletcher Andrew Cartright is a Hotchkiss alumnus.
