Houari Boumedienne Airport

Houari Boumedienne Airport

Houari Boumedienne Airport serves Algiers, the capital of Algeria. It is named after Houari Boumedienne.

Incidents

On August 28, 1992, a bomb went off at the airport, in which 9 people died and 128 were injured. Shortly after, several people were arrested in connection with the bombing, including Hossein Abderrahim, a member of the Islamic party, the FIS. He was executed in 1993. In 2002, Abdelghani Ait Haddad, sentenced to death in absentia attempted to take refuge in Britain after living 9 years in France. There was some controversy surrounding his extradition, as the courts of the United Kingdom has just ruled that people facing the death penalty could not be extradited without assurances that they will not face the death penalty.

On December 24, 1994 an Air France Airbus A300, flight 8969, bound for Paris was seized by four Islamic terrorists during take-off preparations; 3 passengers were killed before the plane departed from Houari Boumedienne Airport; in Marseille a special operations team of the French military stormed the aircraft and killed all 4 hijackers and injured 25 passengers.
