IBM Extended Density Format

IBM Extended Density Format

The eXtended Density Format (XDF) is a way of formatting standard high-density 3.5Inch and 5.25Inch floppy diskettes to larger-than-standard capacities. It is supported natively by IBM's PC-DOS versions 7 and 2000, using the XDF and XDFCOPY commands.

When formatted as XDF disks, 3.5Inch floppies can hold approximately 1.86MiB, and 5.25Inch floppies can hold 1.54MiB. Once created, the disks are read-only, and can only be read if the XDF utility has been loaded. They cannot be written to unless reformatted.
