Jack McCall

Jack McCall

Jack McCall (also known as "Crooked Nose" Jack) is the man who gained notoriety by shooting James "Wild Bill" Hickok to death. Little else is known about him.

On August 2, 1876 he walked into the #10 Saloon in a gold mining camp called Deadwood, in the territory now known as South Dakota, and shot Hickok in the back of the head.

Hickok sat with his back to the door while engaged in a game of poker. The killing may have been retribution for Hickok allegedly slaying his brother, a dispute that arose from gambling, a hired assassination, or simply a desire to gain status as a gunfighter.

He was tried and found not guilty by an impromptu court made up of local miners and businessmen, then fled town. He was later tried, convicted of murder, and hanged in Yankton, South Dakota, then the capital of Dakota Territory.
