Janet Jagan

Janet Jagan

Janet Rosalie Jagan (née Rosenberg, 20 October 1920 in Chicago, Illinois) is a Guyanese political leader. She was married to Cheddi Jagan, a prime minister and president of Guyana well known for his leftist leanings, from 1943 until his death in 1997. Janet Jagan was a radical communist political activist in her youth but moderated her stance later in her career. After Mr. Jagan's death, Mrs. Jagan was elected president and served in that capacity from 1997 to 1999, when she resigned for health reasons.

Being both a Marxist and a Jew, she was the subject of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in the United States; there were false reports that she is related to Ethel and Julius Rosenberg.
