Jemappes
Jemappes (in older texts also: Jemmape and Jemmapes) is a town in Belgium, province Hainaut. Since 1976, it is part of the city Mons. Jemappes is known for the Battle of Jemappes between the French and Austrian armies in 1792.
Département de Jemmape During the French occupation of Belgium (1792-1814), there was a département de Jemmape, named after the Battle of Jemappes. Its capital was Mons. The département was subdivided into the following arrondissements and cantons: - Mons, cantons: Boussu, Chièvres, Dour, Enghien, Lens, Le Roeulx, Mons, Pâturages and Soignies.
- Charleroi, cantons: Beaumont, Binche, Charleroi, Chimay, Fontaine-l'Evêque, Gosselies, Merbes-le-Château, Seneffe and Thuin.
- Tournai, cantons: Antoing, Ath, Celles, Ellezelles, Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, Lessines, Leuze-en-Hainaut, Péruwelz, Quevaucamps, Templeuve and Tournai.
Its territory corresponds more or less with the present Belgian province Hainaut.
