Launceston Airport
Launceston Airport is the airport of Launceston, Tasmania. It is located 15 km south-east of Launceston. The first air travel facility on the site was the Western Junction Aerodrome, first used in 1930. In 1962 a plan for major redevelopment of the airport was approved. This included strengthening of all pavements, a runway extension, and soon after a new terminal building. The site was officially reopened under the name of Launceston Airport in 1962. In October 1982 the runway was once again upgraded, to unlimited Boeing 727 standard. In 1998 the airport was privatised, now being owned by a group known as Australia Pacific Airports (Launceston) Pty. Ltd - a partially owned subsidiary of Australia Pacific Airports Corporation, the owner of Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport. National airlines Qantas, Virgin Blue and JetStar travel to the airport, with direct flights to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane available. Local specialty airline Airlines of Tasmania also performs flights to Moorabbin Airport (Melbourne) and Flinders Island. Altogether it caters for around 14900 flights a year.
