LeMat

LeMat

The LeMat is a unique type of revolver, invented originally in 1856. The distinguishing characteristic of a LeMat is that the revolver's cylinder revolves around a central, separate barrel, of larger caliber than the chambers in the cylinder proper. This central barrel is smoothbore, acting much like a short-barrelled shotgun; the operator can choose whether to fire the regular revolver shot or the large central barrel.

Percussion cap LeMats were very popular in the U.S. Civil War, particularly with Confederate officers. J.E.B. Stuart carried one, and it was considered almost his trademark weapon.

After the introduction of cartridge-firing firearms, the LeMat system appeared in pinfire, but this version is exceedingly rare.

The LeMat, in an effort by French manufacturers made a LeMat cartridge revolver, and was powerful, mainly because of its 16 gauge shotgun barrel. It was seen in French Colonies.
