Liberty (goddess)

Liberty (also known as Lady Liberty or the Goddess of Liberty) personifies liberty and freedom, particularly popular in the United States. Her French counterpart is Marianne.

Depictions


Liberty is often depicted with the five-pointed American stars, usually on a raised hand. Another hand may hold a sword downward. Familiar depiction include the following:
  • The monumental Statue of Liberty, which in turn has been depicted on a number of postage stamps
  • The flag of the State of New York
  • On the dome of the Texas capitol
  • On the dome of the Allen County Courthouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana
