This is a list of formats used by file archiver in archiving and data compression.

(File extensions)—The file extensions may differ across platforms. The case of these extensions may differ on case-insensitve platforms.

(MIME type)—The content types may be conjectural.

(Official name)—The official names may be disputed.

(Platform)—Indicates the platform under which a format is most common. Most file formats can be understood by more than one platform.

Platforms

  • Unix-like—Systems such as Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc.
  • GNU/Linux—Common only on Linux.
  • Macintosh—The Apple Macintosh system, prior to Mac OS X, which is Unix-like.
  • Windows—Microsoft Windows, all 32-bit versions.
  • Amiga
