This is a list of fictional people famous enough to be known unambiguously by one of the
following:

  • Their first or last name
  • A one word nickname
  • Their only known name

Note also that most names in the list will be unusual since common names are likely to be ambiguous and to need a context.

A

  • A.L.F - from the tv sitcom of the same name (nickname; real name is Gordon Shumway)
  • Alice - the protagonist of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll
  • Angel - character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel

    B

  • Bender - from the tv series Futurama. His full name is Bender Bending Rodriguez.
  • Bean
  • Bert - Sesame Street
  • Bokonon - Cat's Cradle
  • Brain - the more intelligent mouse in Pinky and the Brain (part of Animaniacs before having its own series), also the name of Penny's dog in Inspector Gadget
  • Bob "Bulldog" Brisco - the obnoxious radio host on Frasier; he is known for barking at people and banging a gong on his sports radio show on KACL
  • Bubs - Homestar Runner

  • The Doctor - The main character of the long-running television series Doctor Who.
  • Dot - the female and youngest of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot in Animaniacs

  • Elmo - One of the main characters from Sesame Street. Host of Elmo's World.
  • Ernie - Sesame Street

    F

  • Frodo - from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Frodo is his first name, and his last name is Baggins, the same as his uncle Bilbo, of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
  • Fry - main character of the tv series Futurama. His name is actually Philip J. Fry.

  • Gargamel - from the Smurfs (see Characters in the Smurfs)
  • Gandalf - from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth books. Gandalf is also known as Gandalf the Grey, and is also known by a variety of other names.
  • Goofy - Disney cartoon character

  • Holmes - from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series of mystery stories
  • Holly, the senile computer on Red Dwarf

    J

  • Jane - Actually Jane Clayton (ne้ Porter), Tarzan's wife, but everyone recognizes the one name.
  • John - Called John the Balladeer or Silver John. Hero of many fantasy stories by Manly Wade Wellman
  • The Joker - arch-enemy of Batman
  • Joseph K or Josef K. in the original, usually addressed as K., is a protagonist of Franz Kafka's The Trial.

    K

  • Kirk - captain of the original starship Enterprise in Star Trek
  • Klinger - Corporal (later Sergeant) Maxwell Q. Klinger from M*A*S*H
  • Kramer - Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld
  • Kurtz- Mr. Kurtz, from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Colonel Kurtz in the 1980 film Apocalypse Now.

  • Lee from Fallen Angel
  • Leela - from the tv series Futurama. Her full name is Turanga Leela. A different Leela was one of The Doctor's companions on Doctor Who.
  • Link - from the Legend of Zelda series
  • Dave Lister - Rimmer usually calls him this, but Holly usually calls him Dave.

  • Mario - Nintendo mascot
  • Merlin - legendary magicianian
  • Midas - Greek mythological king
  • Mork - from the tv sitcom, Mork & Mindy

  • Neo - from the 1999 movie The Matrix
  • Newman, the postman on Seinfeld
  • Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers (Scooby Doo)

    P

  • Phantom, the - central character in comic
  • Picard - captain of the starship Enterprise in one of the Star Trek series
  • Pinky - the less intelligent mouse in Pinky and the Brain (part of Animaniacs before having its own series)
  • Poirot - detective in a series of mysteries by Agatha Christie
  • Prospero - from "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare

    R

  • Radar - Corporal Walter (Radar) O'Reilly in M*A*S*H (/movie/TV series)
  • Rimmer, his full name is Arnold Judas Rimmer, but everyone calls him Rimmer. Holly usually calls him Arnold.
  • Robert Underdunk Terwilliger (Sideshow Bob of The Simpsons)
  • Romana - One of the last companions of the fourth Doctor on Doctor Who.

  • Selby (friend of Dave Lister in Red Dwarf)
  • Shane from the novel and movie of the same name.
  • Smurfette - the adult female of the Smurfs (see Characters in the Smurfs)
  • Spenser - Robert B. Parker's private eye
  • Spock - The first officer of the starship Enterprise on Star Trek.

    T

  • Tarzan - Edgar Rice Burroughs' famous ape man. Actual full name was John Clayton, Viscount Greystoke.
  • Taz - the Tasmanian Devil, who appears in many Looney Tunes films and products; he even had his own show (Taz-mania)
  • The Cat - Red Dwarf
  • Trapper - John Francis Xavier McIntyre in M*A*S*H (/movie/TV series) and Trapper John, M.D
  • Trent the Thief, from The Long Run
  • Trigger from Only Fools and Horses

  • Velma Dinkley (Scooby Doo)

  • Wakko - the middle kid of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot in Animaniacs
  • Watson - narrator of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
