Lombard rhythm

Lombard rhythm

Name for a rhythm associated with Baroque music, notably that of Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi, which consists of inverted "notes inégales", with the shorter value preceding the long. For example, a sixteenth note followed by a dotted eighth note, repeated to establish a rhythm.

This is an inversion of what is typically known as a dotted rhythm, wherein the longer value precedes the shorter.
