BYRON (January 22, 1788 - April 19, 1824)
1788 :Jan. 22 – Born, 16 Holles Street, London. 1789 :Mother took lodgings in Queen Street, Aberdeen. 1791 :Aug. 2 – Father died in France never having seen his son. :Mother moved to flat in 64 Broad Street, Aberdeen. 1794 – 1798 - At Aberdeen Grammar School. 1798 :May 21 – George Gordon Byron became 6th Baron Byron of Rochdale on death of grandfather. :Aug. – With his mother took up residence at ancestral home, Newstead Abbey, near Nottingham. 1799 :Lived with Parkyns family, Nottingham. Tutored by "Dummer" Rogers. :July – Removed to London by John Hanson, Byron’s lawyer & business agent. :Sept. – Attended Dr. Glennie’s School, Dulwich. :Spent Xmas holidays with Hanson family at Earl’s Court, London. :Spent summer holiday in Newstead Abbey and fell in love with 1st cousin, Margaret Parker. 1801 :April – Entered Harrow School. :Spent summer with mother at Mrs Massingberd’s, 16 Piccadilly, at Hanson’s and in Cheltenham. :Xmas holidays in Bath with mother. 1803 :Feb. – Newstead Abbey leased to Lord Grey de Ruthyn. :July 21 – Mother rented Burgage Manor, Southwell. :Sept. – Fell madly in love with neighbour’s daughter, Mary Chaworth, of Annesley Hall. Refused to go back to Harrow. 1804 :Jan – Fell out with Lord Grey and returned to Harrow. :Mar. 22 – Started holiday at Burgage Manor and met the Pigots who lived opposite. 1805 :Aug 2 – Played for Harrow in annual match v Eton at Lord’s. Scored 6 notches. :Oct. 24 – Went up to Trinity College, Cambridge University. :Friendships with E.N.Long & John Edleston began. 1806 :Feb – Got heavily in debt with moneylenders; dissipation in London. :April – Returned to Trinity College. :July – At Burgage Manor writing poems. :Aug – After acrimonious quarrel with mother escaped to London. :Nov – Collection of poems, Fugitive Pieces, privately printed. 1807 :Jan Second volume of poetry, Poems on Various Occasions, privately printed. :June – Hours of Idleness published. Back at Cambridge started friendships with Cam Hobhouse and Scrope Davies, Matthews and Hodgson. :Dec. – Came down from Cambridge University for good. 1808 :Feb. – Hours of Idleness ridiculed in The Edinburgh Review. :Mar. – Poems Original and Translated published. :July-Aug. – At Brighton with John Hobhouse & Scrope Davies. 1809 :Mar. 13 – Took seat in the House of Lords. :English Bards and Scotch Reviewers published. :June 20 – Travelled to Falmouth with Hobhouse. :July 2 – Set sail with Hobhouse in the Lisbon packet, Princess Elizabeth. :July 7 – Arrived in Lisbon. :July 12-16 – Explored Cintra. :July 20 – Departed for Spain. :July 29 – Arrived Cadiz. :Aug 3 – Sailed in the frigate, Hyperion. :Aug 4 – Arrived at the Rock of Gibraltar. :Aug 16 – Sailed for Malta in packet Townshend. :Aug 31 – Arrived Malta. :Sept – Had romantic affair with Mrs Spencer Smith. Sailed in brig, Spider, for Greece & Albania. :Sept 29 – Landed at Prevesa. :Oct 1 – Left for Joannina. :Oct 11 – Left for Tepelene, Albania, to meet Ali Pasha. :Oct 31 – At Joannina. Started poem, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. :Nov. 20 – Visited Missolonghi. :Dec. 25 – Arrived Athens. 1810 :Mar-Apr – Toured Turkey, visited Smyrna, Ephesus, Troy. :May 3 – Swam Hellespont from Sestos to Abydos. :May 13 – Arrived Constantinople. :July 18 – Arrived Athens. :July 21 – Left for the Morea. :July 26 – Arrived Patras. :Aug 19(?) – At Athens: stayed in Capuchin monastery. :Oct 18 – Returned Athens. 1811 :March – Wrote Hints from Horace & The Curse of Minerva :Apr 22 – Sailed in the Hydra :Apr 30-June 2 – At Malta.
