Lothar de Maizière

Lothar de Maizière

Lothar de Maizière (born 2 March 1940) is a German politician from the former East Germany.

He was born in Nordhausen and studied violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. He used to be in the Berlin symphony orchestra before he went on to study law at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

In 1990 he was elected to the Volkskammer of the German Democratic Republic as a member of the CDU, in the first and only free elections East Germany ever held. He then became the successor to Hans Modrow as Prime Minister, and held this position until October 2, 1990 — the following day East Germany was annexed by West Germany to form a united Germany.

After German Reunification he was appointed Minister for Special Affairs in the CDU government, until allegations that he had worked for the Stasi led to his resignation in 1991.
