Louis of Savoy

 

Louis of Savoy

Louis (Ludovico or Lodovico in Italian, b.1413-d.1465) was the Duke of Savoy from 1440 to 1465.

He married Anne of Lusignan (1419-1462), titular heiress of Cyprus and Jerusalem and a daughter of King Janus of Cyprus. They had 6 children:

  • Amadeus IX of Savoy (1435-1472)
  • Louis (b.1436-d.1482), married Queen Regnant Charlotte of Cyprus.
  • Philip II of Savoy (1438-1497)
  • Margaret (1439-1483)
  • Giano Count of Geneva (1440-1491)
  • Pietro Bishop of Geneva (1440-1458)
  • Janus Count of Faucigny, Governor of Nice. (1440-1491)
  • Charlotte (b.1441-d.1483), married Louis XI of France
  • Agnese (1445-1508)
  • Giovanni Ludovico Bishop of Geneva (1447-1482)
  • Bona (b.1449-d.1503), married Galeazzo Maria Sforza, duke of Milan
  • Giacomo Count of Romont (1450-1486)
  • Francesco Archbishop of Auch & Bishop of Geneva (1454-1490).

    In 1453 he received, from Margaret de Charny, the Shroud of Turin, which would have been property of the house of Savoy until 1946, at the end of the Kingdom of Italy. The Shroud of Turin was bequeathed to the Holy See in 1983.
