M-Train

M-Train

M>Train was the former operator of half of Melbourne's suburban railway network. It operated the Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston, Broadmeadows, Werribee, Williamstown, Sydenham, Sandringham and Upfield lines, as well as maintaining most of the underground City Loop stations. It ceased operation at 3:00AM on April the 18th, 2004, with Connex taking over all rail operations. Its former motto was M> Moving Melbourne.

Privatisation

M>Train was created in 1999 as Bayside Trains when Jeff Kennett privatised Melbourne's public transport system. In July 2001, National Express, the operator at the time renamed Bayside Trains to M>Train, as well as rebranding its Swanston Trams franchise as M>Tram. National Express was forced to hand back control of all of its public transport franchises to the state government in December 2002, with M>Train being run under government control for the last period of its life.
